Born in Logan City, Brisbane, TOA O LE AFI PATI LEVASA is Australia’s first Samoan-style fire knife competition—a celebration of Ailao Afi, the ancestral warrior dance rooted in the traditional nifo’oti war club. This ancient practice evolved into the modern fire knife performance in 1946 when Uluao “Freddie” Letuli ignited the blade, creating the dynamic art form known around the world today. Each year, elite competitors from across Australia and the Pacific showcase precision, power, and storytelling as they twirl blazing knives in honour of Samoan heritage while building new multicultural connections.
The competition pays tribute to World Fire Knife Champion Tautai Pati Levasa (1997, 1998, 2001, 2002), one of the most respected and accomplished figures in global Ailao Afi. His legacy as a cultural warrior, mentor, and international performer shapes the event’s core values of authenticity, discipline, and excellence.
Also central to the event is Malietoa Tauāsa Sieulu Avea—Chief Sielu, the first-ever World Fire Knife Champion (1993) and founder of Hawaii’s renowned Chief’s Luau. Serving as Head Judge for our 2024 inaugural competition, Chief Sielu brought decades of cultural leadership, performance mastery, and dedication to mentoring the next generation. His involvement reinforces the international credibility and cultural authority of TOA O LE AFI PATI LEVASA.
